The Evening Star. DUNEDIN, SATURDAY, DEC. 23, 1865.

The Evening Star will not be published on -Christmas D&y. We observe that in consequence of the arrival of the English mail the Reading Room and Library G f the Athenaeum will be open on Christmas Day and until noon on Boxing Day. Fob some time past Mr G-. R. West, the choir master at St Paul's Church has been instructing a number of boys in singing, and we understand that they will for the first time join the choir at to-morrow's service, when a collection will be made in aid of the Organ Fund. ' In Messrs Gillies and Street's office this morn. ; ing we were shewn samples of the stone from the Canada Reef, Tokomairiro. In every piece of .. stone gold is discernable with the naked eye, and the quartz is of that description known by . miners as ■" kixicLLy stoixe." A_t tKe same place there is also on view the gold obtained from the .. first trial crushing of 30cwt, a very fine sample, .weighing loz 18dwts. We are assured that richer stone -than that crushed has since been obtained. The original prospectors are about to form a public Company to work the mines, and from what we* hear of the very reasonable price . asked for the discovery and the prospect of mine generally we hava no doubt but the t will at <raae be tak«& up.

We observe in another column that his Honor • the Superintendent has notified to Mr H. J. "Walter that he will receive the deputation from the Licensed Victuallers oh Tuesday next. The Resident Magistrate's Court and offices will be closed for ordinary business from the 23rd instant to the 2nd January. The usual night charges will be taken between those dates each morning at 10 o'clock. We are requested to state that the artist who painted the view of Flagstaff Hill exhibited at Mr D. Henderson's is Mr George O'Brien, C.E., late of the City Engineer department, and not Mr G-. Browne, as reported by us in our issue of the 21st. Mb Stewart, Manager of the Bank of New South Wales, Beechworth, has been appointed to take charge of all the branches of the Bank of New South Wales in New Zealand. We learn that the English, Australian, and New Zealand Marine Insurance Company (Limited) have this day arranged with the Otago Insurance Company to take over its marine business and connection. The prospectus of the new company will appear in our next issue. In the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, before James Fulton, Esq., R.M., Abraham Moses, charged with obstructing the thoroughfare by placing packing cases thereon, was fined 5s and costs. Richard alias Wiliam White, who has been remanded on several occasions on a charge of stealing from a dwelling at Nelson, was again brought up. As no reply had been received from the Nelson authorities, the prisoner was discharged. Fanny Edwards, charged with using indecent language, was fined £5 and costs. Margaret Robinson and Margaret Swords were charged with a similar offence, but the case was dismissed through not being sufficiently proved. John Gleeson, charged with cutting timber on Crown Lands, was fined 20s. We understand that the directors of the Hindon Quartz Crushing Company have engaged the services of Mr Thomas Roskruge as manager of the works at Hindon.
