The Evening Star. DUNEDIN, FRIDAY, DEC. 22, 1865.
In the Provincial Council, The Speaker took the chair at 12 noon. The Provincial Treasurer moved and the Provincial Secretary seconded, '' That the House at its rising adjourn until 12 o'clock tomorrow. " M!r STJ£^* r: * 3T, '?*•=^^• —»«v-rwa i«ia :.ri j.hojtjbui-. seconded as ai> amendment, " That the House should adjourn to the first Thursday in the new year (4th January)." The motion was negatived, the votes being—ayes, 11 ; noes, 13. Mr Macandrew moved and Mr Grant seconded, "That the House should adjourn until Wednesday next, at 12 o'clock." Mr Haughton said that it was highly inconvenient for many members to meet at that hour, and suggested an alteration to 2 o'clock. This was consented to, and the amendment was carried. Mr Reid asked the Government, " If it is still the intention of the Government that the Civil Service Commission should complete their labors and present a Report for the consideration of the next meeting of the Provincial Council, and is it expected that such Report shall contain a recommendation as to the rates of salaries of the different heads of departments and other Government Officers ?" The reply of the Provincial Secretary was te the effect that the Government would attend to the matter if allowed to remain in office. The Licensing Bill and the Fencing Ordinance, 1856, Amendment Bills were read a third time and passed. The Roads Districts Loan Bill was resumed in Committee, and progress was reported without any further debate. The Otago Municipal Corporations Ordinance, 1865, Amendment Bill was resumed in Committee, and similarly treated. The Dunedin Reserves Management Bill, next in order on the paper, was passed over for the present. The despatch respecting the conveyance of inland mails was being considered when our reporter left.
