ADVERTISING ON THE WEST COAST. The following “ Notice to Advertisers,” published in the West Coast Times, suggests the idea that newspapers are flourishing there. The italics are ours : “All advertisements must be sent in to the office before 5 o’clock on the day preceding publication ; if later, one-half extra the usual charge will he made. All advertisements are received conditionally upon their being room for them ; and the proprietors reserve the right on occasions of a heavy press of matter to vnthdraw, temporarily, any advertisement that is not prima facie of an urgent character. Charge per Insertion eor First insertion, per inch ... Every subsequent insertion Advertisements of 15 words ~ 30 words Advertising. £ s d 6 6 5 0 2 6 4 6 Judging by the supplements issued by the journal in question, ‘ ‘ theheavy press of matter” must occur pretty often ; and hero must arise a difficulty, very hard we should imagine, for the manager to get over. One advertisement makes the inquiry, “ 'Where can I get a good meal?” and we suppose that it is inserted because it is “prima facie of an urgent character.” The advertiser is, however, soon answered by some one advertising that he wants “it to be well known that a first-class dinner, consisting of soup, joints and pastry can be had for 3s. A Melbourne celebrity not unknown in Dunedin, appears, Phoenix-like, to have risen from the ashes of his business here and advertizes as follows : “ fl}~ QIAO WAY’S Pills and Ointment superI I seded ; Perry Davis’s Painkiller nowhere ; Townsend’s Sarsaparilla and Blair’s Gout Pills not required, by using A TUMBLER FULL OF NELSON ALE, three times a day ; to be had at the GRIDIRON HOTEL, dispensed by CHARLEY WILLIAMS, Sixpence each dose. ;N", B. —Overdoses not administered. ’ ’ Altogether the Hokitika newspapers contain ample evidence that the people there believe, as they properly should, in advertizing.
