The Evening Star. DUNEDIN, FRIDAY, NOV. 17, 1865.
Tns members of the Licensed Victuallers* Association are informed by an advertisement in another column that a general meeting will take place to-morrow (Saturday, 18th inst.) at three o’clock at M'Gubbiu’s Otago Hotel. The business is announced as being important. In his speech to the electors of Bruce County at Tokomairiro on Tuesday last Mr Macandrew, in referring to the petitions against the Land Bill presented by him from that district, said : “ The two petitions against the Bill had been of great use to him ; but he regretted to say that -the only individual member who attempted to throw cold water and discredit on them was an Otago member. (ISTamo.) It was the late Post-master-General, who, when the petitions were read, remarked about a strange similarity between the signatures, and insinuated that »they were forgeries, saying also that it was easy to get up petitions about anything, and hinting ■that he (Mr Macandrew) had got them up, ■when, as the electors knew, he had never seen the petitions till given to him for presentation.”
No change took place in the programme at the Princess Theatre last night, and the performance passed off very successfully. This evening the comedy of ‘'Time Tries All” will -be presented, followed by the “ Grand National Tableau,” and the burlesque ox “Ye Lady of Lyons.” We regret to learn that to-morrow evening will temporarily close the Princess Theatre for dramatic performances for a month, Mr Mumford’s company proceeding to Christchurch during which time Mr Foley’s Circus Troupe Troupe will occupy the stage.
The Resident Magistrate was occupied the whole of this morning in re-hearing a cas°, — Rudd v. Levy, a claim of £2O, the value of a watch pawned by the plaintiff to the defendant, the ticket of wdiiclx he had lost. The evidence disclosed some peculiar dealing, which the decision of the Magistrate, having been deferred until Tuesday next, will probably enable us to »rfer to.
