We are happy±o learn that the Otago Rifle Association is in a flourishing condition, and that the next competition will in all probability be a great success. At the monthly meeting of the Council of the Association, held last evening, the sub-committee appointed to collect subscriptions and donations for prizes, reported satisfactorily of the result of their efforts ; and it is likely the Association will have a very considerable fund at its disposal. The directors of the Caledonian Society met last evening at M'Cubbin's Hotel, the VicePresident in the chair. The minutes of the last meeting were read and connrmed. The various committees then reported. The tender of Mills Dick and Co. was accepted for the printing required. The consideration of the various designs for the medals was postponed, to enable the committee to further examine the different tenders, &c. Mr M'Cubbin's offer as to accommodation was accepted, he giving suitable rooms, &c. The following gentlemen were duly elected directors :—Messrs Kirkcaldy, Beveridge, and M'Pherson. The meeting separated, after a vote of thanks to the chairman.

A public dinner is to be given shortly to W. H. Reynolds, Esq., M.H.R., in acknowledgment of the eminent services he has rendered the citizens of Dunedin in the General Assembly. A committee of gentlemen has been appointed to carry out this object, and will meet at the Provincial Hotel on Monday at noon. A special meeting of the Otago Building Society will be held in the Oddfellows Hall, George-streetj on Monday evening at 8 o'clock, on important business, pdrticulars of which are given in an advertisement.

In our last night's issue we gave a brief account of the discovery at Poi-t Chalmers, under somewhat mysterious circumstances, of the body of a lumper named Crawford. From further information which we have received, there does not appear to be any reasons for suspecting that the deceased has been murdered ; but the circumstances point to a case of suicide, committed under an attack of delirium tremens. The deceased was %vell known at Port Chalmers, and had been seen alive on Wednesday or Thursday. When found yesterday, the body was laid on a stretcher, with a deep stab over the region of the heart; and the right hand of the deceased man was stained with blood. A pen-knife, with which apparently the fatal wound had been inflicted, was found in the folds of his shirt, leaving little doubt that death had been caused by the- deceased's own hands.
