POLICY IN JAVA
DUTCH GOVERNMENT
INTENTIONS FOR EARLY SETTLEMENT
LONDON, December 25. The Netherlands radio put out tonight what it called a statement about the policy of the Netherlands Government in Indonesia. This was not an official or even a semi-official statement, but set out in general terms the problems to be solved.
After quoting the American declaration of a week ago which expressed the hope of an early settlement, the statement said that the Netherlands Governments intended to reach a settlement with the Indonesian leaders by which Dutchmen and Indonesians would be able to undertake the reconstruction of the East Indies.. It stressed the of the Netherlands Government to co-operate with the Indonesians on the basis of equality, and emphasised that the two parties were in constant contact, and that the Lieutenant-Governor of the Netherlands East Indies, Dr. van Mook, was at present having satisfactory conversations with the Government at The Hague. Those conversations would be supplemented by a conference with the British Government, which it was hoped would produce results acceptable to all concerned.
