ENGINES AT REAR

POST-WAR OMNIBUSES

"The post-war trend in omnibus design appears to lie in the. change of the position of the engine from the front to the rear of the chassis," states the annual report of the Transport Department. "This not only provid*es a clear and wide entrance for passengers, but also minimises noise, vibration, and fumes. In order to meet the demand for larger omnibuses the Department is prepared to increase the overall length limitation from 30ft to 33ft for passengex-service vehicles operating on approved routes."

The report also says that owing to war conditions very few new omnibus bodies have been constructed. As the new chassis which would come to hand in the next year or two would be of the conventional type, little scope would exist for making any outstanding changes in body design. Operators would, however, be encouraged to provide a rear exit door for passengers to relieve the congestion which often existed when passengers were required to use one door for entrance and exit purposes.
