Shortage of red silk is one reason why the Pope was obliged to delay the appointment of the new cardinals, says the Associated Press correspondent at Vatican City. A consistory for me creation of the new cardinals might have been convoked sooner if the fabric required for the clothing was available. At present Rome prices, each cardinal would nave to pay from £6250 to £7500 for his wardrobe, including his red robes, ermine-trimmed purple cape, and uniforms for his attendant.
