SHIELD XI IN ACTION

BUCH/VN'S GOOD BOWLING

It is nothing new to see a Wellington representative cricket team struggling for runs but it is a little unusual to find the province's Plunket Shield team in difficulties against a team chosen from players who missed out when the first choice was made. Yet this is what happened at the Basin Reserve on Saturday when advantage was taken of a free da"y to give the shield players some practice. "The Rest," who discovered at the outset that their opponents were prepared to treat them with considerable respect, cmickly secured the upper hand and proceeded to stay on top for the rest of the day. In about three and a quarter hours the Plunket Shield team made 141 runs, The Rest replying with 171 for four, made in approximately two and a half hours.

A. M. Matheson, one of the surprise omissions from the representative side, was not a member of the winning team, but R Buchan. Hutt's stock bowler, was very definitely there, and, with six for "45 off 27 overs, was largely responsible for the failure of the representative batsmen. Later his teammate, J. Kemp, who had been announced as twelfth man for the Shield XI, played a bright knock, while E. Tmdill (Midland) batted freely for the hichest score of the day. , The match was plnyed m perfect weather and attracted an excellent attendance. Details:— WKMiIXUTOX. First Innings. ,T.
