ROYAL NETHERLANDS MARINES
On December 10, 1945, the Royal Netherlands Marines, the oldest Dutch military corps, and the oldest marine corps in the world, celebrated its 280 years of existence wherever Dutch marines were present—on board Royai Netherlands navy ships, as well as in Holland, the Netherlands West Indies, and Australia. The corps was instituted by the famous Admiral dc Ruyter on December 10, 1665. and took part in demonstrations against Chatham and Lowestoft in 1666. In 1704 the corps fought side by side with the British marines in the capture of.Gibraltar. Apart from other feats of arms, there is the action of the Dutch war vessel Medusa in the forcing of Shimonoseki Straits in 1864. when Japan was "broken open." After the sea battle of the Allied British, American, and Dutch fleets against the Japanese fleet, these Dutch marines from the Medusa landed on shore there and captured several heavy Japanese batteries. __
