GRAVE ASSAULT
YOUNG MAN SENTENCED
A term of 15 months' reformative detention was imposed by the Chief Justice (Sir Michael Myers) on Kenneth Bayne, 23, farm labourer, who appeared in the Supreme Court yesterday afternoon for sentence for violence with intent to rob, unlawful conversion (two charges), theft, and mischief. The major charge concerned an assault upon a storekeeper at Rere, near Gisborne. The prisoner, from the dock, said that he had been led into the offences. He had never been before the Court previously. His Honour remarked on the gravity- of the assault and the deliberate nature of the offences.
