INTERRUPTED CAREER

(BY "BINOCULAR.")

FLAHULUK IN WORK

Shade Unlucky

GOOD WINTER PERFORMER

The Musketdon gelding Flahuluk, now a six-year-old, has rejoined P. Burgess's active brigade at Trentham after his compulsory spell. As a four-year-old Flahuluk appeared to be on the high-road to building a splendid career as a handicapper when he followed up a brace of hack successes, at Otaki and Wanganui, by carrying off the Parliamentary Handicap at Trentham in July, 1944. - In the following term he. ran third to Langue dOr and Indian Sport in the Foxton Cup, and to Lady Spiral and Arustra m the President's Handicap at Wairarapa on New Year's Day. He ran second to First In in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap on the second day of the Wellington Summer Meeting last January, but on the.final day he was involved in a mix-up in the Patriotic Handicap and injured a leg. He was sent out for a spell, and when on his return it was found that he had not fully recovered, his trainer and partowner decided not to persevere with him. However, it is now hoped that the chestnut will be able to proceed with an uninterrupted preparation.

Jumping Talent,

For some years past Trentham's strength in jumpers has been definitely weak. This is probably due to the indifferent facilities for serious tests in, private. However, A. Goodman, who has met with some success with Nanook, has taken in hand Flak, an aged gelding by Wheriko from a Thomond mare, with the intention ol trying. him as a hurdler. P. J. Reardon has another likely type in Novachord, a gelding by Colossus from Sweet Music, and half-brother to the well-performed Piccolo. A highactioned galloper, he should handle winter conditions well. Although a year older than Piccolo, he has never been seriously tried. A, Nice Type. The Trentham trainer F. Gough has in work a three-year-old by- Lord Quick from the King Mark mare Basil the dam being from Pelt, by Demosthenes—Pellicule. by Birkenhead Lord Quick is a son of Lord Quex and Pronto, the dam being by Kilboy from Cerinthia, by Malster. Although the newcomer comes from a line thai has not been particularly successful, he looks the part to make good himself. He will race as Master Bruce. Very Burly. The Monarch has been again taken up by H. B. Lorigan at Trentham. The Croupier—Kiltruda gelding is very burly and it. will probably be some time before he is ready to show his real form. His brother. Voltaire,, is no longer at Trentham, being now trained by E. C. Baker, at Otaki. and is racing in the interest of Mr S. Bell The showing of Voltaire at Otaki, when he finished on for fourth in the open seven "furlongs, suggested that he was coming back to form. Did Not Go North. That good-looking juvenile.Repudiate did not go north to Ellerslie for the G.N. Foal, Stakes, and the Defaulter gelding will have his next outing at Tauherenikau at New Year. Largely Inactive. Although P. Burgess has won twice recently with Malanui, the majority of his team have been inactive of late However, it is possible that Big Money High Order, and the Kincardine —Te Marua colt, who will race as Jet Plane, will accompany Malanui to Tauherenikau. The trainer also has Donegal Bay, Bonnie Fair, and a colt by Arvakur in work. Account Opened. On. the occasion of his previous visit to the Otaki course Gay Stroller directed attention to himself by finishing just outside of the money after being badly left. Apparently patrons last Saturday had not forgotten the display for, despite the fact that he was ridden by a little-known apprentice, the goodlooking Foxbridge gelding duly fulfilled expectations. Now trained by. H. A. Telford at Trentham, the success carried this trainer's "trot" still further. • Run Broken. A winner at her two previous starts, Soneri had scored very impressively, and she appeared to be in for another success in the Otaki Hack Handicap but she had to be content with second placing. She had the services of a young apprentice, but no fault could be found with the manner in which she was handled. On tlie Improve. Earlier in his career the Spiral— Curtain gelding Barrage showed a fund of promise, but he then ■ lost '• form. However, he showed that he was on the improve by coming from some distance back for third •in the Otaki Hack Handicap. Now trained by F. R. Go t ugh at Trentham, Barrage should eaifry his improvement further before very long. Pleasing Performance. Having his second outing in the colours of Mr. M. Millar, of Palmerston North, who went to a good figure to secure the Salmagundi gelding, Saludos won the open sprint at Otaki very comfortably. V. J. Sellars, who had the mount, did not allow Saludos to drift as much as usual, and approaching the straight entrance he asked for a further effort, Saludos ranging up to be handy. Thereafter, he had the measure of the leaders a furlong from the post.

Excellent Fields. Although the Wairarapa Racing Club will be in direct opposition to the Marton and Hawke's Bay Clubs at New Year, the array of,nominations suggests that the majority will be on hand for the meeting. Fortunately, the entrants hail largely from stables in the area. Trentham and Otaki assisting to build the numbers. The substantial prize of £800 hangs on the Cup contest, and class is well represented by horses of the calibre of Caithness, Financial, Bridge Acre, Foxcatcher, Lowry Bay, Honest Sal. Lady Spiral. Home-trained. First and second place-getters in the Tararua Highweigh'. at Otaki last Saturday were Sir Raleigh and Mine Host, both of whom are trained on the course. Last season the former, who is by Defoe from the Martarma mare Tawene, showed a lot of pace in .the maiden event but fell when almost at the winning post. The fall appeared to take its toll, for the chestnut has done little racing since, last Saturday being his second start this term. However, the manner in Which he scored suggested that his trainer, W. Morrison, has him very well. Solid Support. The Man's Pal gelding Mine Host, who is now in D. J. Burgess's stable at Otaki, had the services of A. Midwood in the highweight event at Otaki, and a late run on the tote made him second favourite on the win-machine. When he was beaten into second his placebackers profited by his ranking fifth elect on that machine. Mine Host comes from the Woodend mare Substitute, a daughter of the Greyspear mare Spearmaid, but he has not so far lived up to his breeding. A Big Type. Debater, a big Defaulter four-year-old, was given a run in the Novice Stakes at the Hororata Meeting on Saturday, it being his1 first outing since early last term. He is expected to improve with experience.. Represented. That very 'useful hurdler a.nd 'chaser, Kanui Te Pai, who now races as a gelding, was represented at Otaki by one of his produce. Utility, a four-year-oJd daughter of the Guinaforte—Dolly Fisher mare Unique, dam also of Bay Robe. Bay Robe does his racing m the interest oJ his breeder. Mr. S. R. Hammond, of Hunterville, and Utility carries the colours of the Awapum trainer, L Knapp. Utility ran quite a promising race. Improving. i The Foxbridge—Sweet Colleen colt I Balcherrie, a member of P. Reardon's I team al Trentham. showed definite improvement in the novice event at Otaki, coming home solidly for third He did not do a great deal of racing last season,' and as he comes from a well-per- , formed Australian family he should go jon improving.

The Wheriko gelding Royal Flash has repeatedly shown a good turn of,speed without staying on in ' his races. At. Otaki he was unfortunate in that, after breaking through the tapes prior to the actual dispatch, he was ■ one of the slowest away, and his fourth under the circumstances was quite a good effort. \ Being Given Time. The Riccarton trainer R. Wilson has taken in hand a four-year-old gelding by Lord Quex, owned by Mr. J. H. Grigg, but he will not be asked to enter upon his jumping career immediately. New Moon, a two-year-old by Nizami from Aurora Borealis, in the same ownership, has been broken in, ! but is to be gelded before he is trained seriously. A Good Record. J. Williamson, who won the Hamilton Handicap on Rakanui, has ridden' the Hunting Song gelding four times for four wins. The four successful tilts were made in the Wellington R.C. Handicap. Wellington Autumn Handicap, Nolan Handicap at Ellerslie, and .the Hamilton Handicap at Te Rapa. Well-related. Brown Night, winner of the Waikato Hac1 Cup, is by Nightmarch from Gay i Helen, a daughter of Iliad, and Praise. He is thus closely related to Russian Ballet and Representative. Further, as Praise is by Limond from Eulogy. Brown Night claims an aristocratic pedigree. On the Mend. ; J. P. Ryan, of Hastings; who had to leave Keening behind on his return from the C.J.C. Meeting, has been advised that the' Coronach gelding is making good progress towards recovery from the nasty injury he received when he crashed into the runningrail at Riccarton. There, is every hope that Keening will be able to race again.
