BUSH FIRE MENACE
WARNING TO CAMPERS
Despite many requests and warnings issued from time to time regarding the risk of fires, there are several localities throughout the country where «rass and bush fires have already caused serious damage. The position is so bad in the Rotorua afforestation area that it is causing the Internal Affairs Department grave concern. Today the Automobile Association (Wellington) made a further appeal to motorists to take every precaution while on holiday tours. Lighted matches and cigarette butts thrown into roadside grass or scrub are a frequent source of fires. Motorists are again warned to tread on cigarette ends and matches to make sure they are out. Campers lighting fires should do so in the centre of a bare plot of ground after scraping away all inflammable material, and should afterwards make sure that the fire is properly extinguished.
