WARNING BY JUDGE
YOUNG LAW-BREAKERS
A stern warning that unless they changed their habits and mode pi lite there would be nothing ahead oi them but continual, and possibly continuous prison life as habitual criminals, was given by the Chief Justice (Sir Michael Myers) in the Supreme Court today to Leonard Lloyd Dean, alias Ward, 21, labourer, and Lawrence Charles Lawson, 18, farm labourer, who appeared for sentence on eight charges of housebreaking. His Honour, after referring to. the prisoners' previous convictions, said it seemed, that5 they'were both heading for what, he had been told by prison authorities every prisoner hated and feared —declaration as an habitual criminal. On this occasion he did not propose to place any warning upon the record. A substantial sentence must be imposed, and he suggested that during the term ol incarceration the prisoners had better make up their minds to lead decent lives when they came out. , Dean was sentenced to three years reformative detention, and Lawson to a similar term in a Borstal institution.
