BENBECULA IN FAVOUR

VICTORY HANDICAP

DUMEDIN'S OPENING DAY

(Special to "The Post.")

CHRISTCHURCH, This DayJ Benbecula raced ungenerously after winning the Riccarton Handicap at the New Zealand Cup Meeting, but he has been freshened up, and if allowed to run along freely will set his opponents a difficult task over. the^' mile of the Victory Handicap at Wingatui tomorrow, when the Dunedin Jockey Club's Meeting opens. Lance Wing has his second to Vafort in the Fendalton. Handicap at Riccarton as a recommendation, but Amorlad has no form, though he is a likely improver who may not be long in showing up. Royal Rae is capable over a mile and is at the peak of his form. He ran third in the Fendalton Handicap and then won the H. A. Knight Memorial at Motukarara. He should again play a leading part. Great Coon won over a mile at Invercargill last month and has since been, working attractively, while Good Cast, a double winner at Tapanui, and Aurora Australis. are other Southland candidates in good order. Martial Note is capable of being .more than a nuisance, but like Aurora Australis . his programme • has been left open ;.s he also is an acceptor for the Grandstand Handicap, which looks the easier proposition.

Derene should make up for her unlucky defeat in the Kuight. Memorial when she contests the Federal Handicap, 6 furlongs. It is not a good sprint field and she should put too much dash into her effort for the others. Grand Forest missed his chance in the Members' Handicap at Riccarton through a poor start, but he is a capable sprinter and likely to be well suited by this company. Lyndall was also checked in the Members' Handicap, and L. J. Ellis did not knock her about when he realised the chase was a hopeless one. Lyndall had shown much improved form- in Southland, and this half-sister to Irish Note must be conceded a good chance.

THE JOKER TO REAPPEAR. ..The Joker and Foxhaven are fresh horses at the Jiead of the Grandstand Handicap field, but both will probably need racing, and the winner should come from lower down in the handicap. Aurora Australis and Martial Note will both have strong followirigs if this race is chosen for them, and two hacks, Double Cross and Real Chase, will not be out of place. The only likely Champagne Stakes candidate to contest the Juvenile Handicap is Naughty Lady, the speedy Haughty Winner filly who made short work of the opposition in the Acorn Stakes at Riccarton. She should not have any difficulty in carrying on her winning way. Form horses engaged are:— Otokia Hurdles. — Commemorate, Forage, Sir Saladin.
