EIGHTH PERIOD IMPORTS

"In view of the special circumstances involved, it has-been decided to make valid for 'imports from*-the .TJrtited Kingdom up 'to January Sl.i-1946, licences for the year 1945 :in respect' of goods ordered- from the United Kingdom under eighth period licences prior to November 1, 1944," states a letter received by the Associated Chambers of Commerce from the Minister of Customs (Mr. Nash) in reply to representations from Associated Chambers. It was pointed out to the Minister that because of delayed loading due to the dockers' strike in Britain, goods ordered under eighth period licences, which expired on December 31 next, would not qualify under those licences. Because these delays were beyond the control of the importer, and the exporter an extension of the. licence was sought. ••■■- : . ■-.-. .-,- - v .■•-. The Minister intimated that a similar extension could not be granted on shipments from other countries, and promised to give full consideration to a suggestion that a further extension beyond June 30, 1946. be made in respect of goods ordered prior to November, 1945, under 1945 licences.
