MENTION IN DISPATCHES

Advice has been received from the High Commissioner for New Zealand in London that the King has been pleased to approve of the following awards of Mention in Dispatches to the following personnel of the Royal New Zealand Navy:— FOR SERVICE DURING THE JAPANESE ATTACK ON SINGAPORE. Temporary Lieutenant Launcelot H. Herd. FOR SERVICES IN THE WAR IN EUROPE. Temporary Lieutenant Richard L. Bullock. Temporary Lieutenant Graham w. Finch. . - Temporary Lieutenant (A) Owen C. Johnstone. Temporary Sub-Lieutenant Kenneth. I, C. Clark. Temporary Sub-Lieutenant Douglas C. Findlay. _, Temporary Sub-Lieutenant Thomas M. Sunderland. Petty Officer (A) Brian Stacey. Lieutenant Herd joined the Royal New Zealand Navy as a probationary temporary sub-lieutenant on December 18, 1940, under Scheme A, which was open to yachtsmen.* Prior to his entry in the Navy, he was a member of the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club. Lieutenant Herd was reported missing in the Singapore area on April 16, 1942, and was found to be a prisoner of war in January, 1944, and was repatriated in September last. His next-of-kin is his wife, Mrs. N. M. Herd, 104 Oriental Parade, Wellington. Lieutenant Finch joined the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve as an ordinary seaman on February 21, 1939. He was mobilised for war service on December 16, 1939, and proceeded to England on loan to the Royal Navy. On March 6, 1941, Lieutenant Finch was promoted from the lower deck to temporary acting sublieutenant and to temporary lieutenant on September 6, 1943. He is at present ,on passage to New Zealand after completing nearly six years' overseas service. His next-of-kin is his mother, Mrs. O. Finch, 6 Upland Road, Kelburn.

Sub-Lieutenant Clark was a student prior to his entry in the Royal New Zealand Navy as an ordinary seaman on August 11, 1943. He was promoted to sub-lieutenant on May 5, 1944, after completing his necessary training at H.M.S. King Alfred. He was born in Wellington on July 31, 1922. His next-of-kin is his father, Mr. A. S. Clark. 3 Eckington Terrace, Nelson. Petty Officer (A) Stacey was born in Wellington. He received part of his education in England and joined the Royal Navy as an naval airman second class on June 30, 1943. Petty Officer Stacey subsequently transferred to the Royal New Zealand Navy. His next-of-kin is his mother, Mrs. F. Stacey, 18 Granville Road, Finchley, London. Petty Officer Stacey is at present attached to H.M.N.Z.S. Cook awaiting his discharge from the Royal New Zealand Navy.
