The Mayor and Mayoress, Mr. and Mrs. Appleton, will spend Christmas in Wellington but are leaving for a three weeks' holiday in North Auckland next week.

Mr. A. A. Edwards, manager of the Hamilton branch of the Bank of New Zealand, is retiring on January 31, after having completed 41 years' service. He joined the bank in Wellington and served in the Pahiatua, Mangaweka, Ashburton, and Christchurch branches.' He became accountant, at Dunedin and manager at Blenheim, and was transferred to Hamilton six years ago. Mr. Edwards will be succeeded by Mr. C. A. Brace, of Taumarunui.

. .Sir Apirana Ngata has been appointed to the Board*of Trustees of the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum as a representative of the Maori race, and Mr. D. A. Ewen and Mr. G. G. G. Watson as representatives of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts.

Mr. G. A. Taylor, manager for New Zealand of the Prudential Assurance Co., Ltd., has, for personal reasons, relinquished his position. Mr. G. H. Heath, A.F.1.A., A.1.1.5.,, a member of the head office management, and accountant for Australia and New Zealand of the company, has been appointed temporarily to fill the position as acting manager for New Zealand. Pending Mr. Heath's arrival, Mr. K. J. H. Waller, chief agency supervisor for New Zealand, will assume control.

Among those who returned by the transport Mooltan yesterday was Mr. Colin Tapley, formerly a well-known film personality in Hollywood, who has been serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Mr. Tapley, who proceeded to Lyttelton last night, en route to his home in Dunedin, expects his wife and family to join him soon, and he may settle on a farm in Central Otago.
