FIRE ON TRAIN
DEATh OF PHALERON SIGN PA NAPIER, December 19. When a wagon on a goods train caught fire between Pukehou and Otane yesterday morning, the thoroughbred brood mare Phaleron Sign was burnt to death. It is believed that a spark from the engine ignited straw at the bottom of the horse-box. The horse was being consigned from Hastings to'MrJ H. D. Matthews, Raglan. When the fire was noticed, flames had a good hold on the wagon. The crew, realising that it .would-be- im-. possible to extinguish the fire with the limited equipment on the train, made full speed for the water tanks at Otane The horse was dead when the train stopped, and the badly-charred wagon was taken from the train at Waipukurau. Other rolling-stock was not affected. Phaleron Sign was a four-year-old brown mare by Phaleron Bay from Countersign, and thus a half-sister to Indian Sign and Linguist. As a two-year-old Phaleron Sign won the A.R.C. Victoria Handicap, beating Navrose and Artificer. This was her only success.
