WANGANUI HORSES

ACTIVITIES FOR HOLIDAYS

(Special to "The Post.")

This Day

G. Ivil will be riding at New Plymouth on Boxing Day, and his mounts will include Alderman, Hulabaloo Molly Martia, and Tatara Lad (in the hurdles).

That good little mare Derrogue is to resume track work after the holidays. The spell she . has had since Waverley has done her a lot of good, and she is looking in great order to start another preparation. The Phaleron Bay filly All Bay continues to train on nicely, but she is not likely to race at Awapuni, present intentions being to keep her for the Marlon Meeting. , The Coronach filly Glamour Girl is making steady improvement, and if she continues to settle down this three-year-old should, win races. She is a long stridor with easy action and more than average speed.

Tatara Lad put in two rounds at a solid pace yesterday morning. This gelding is only a pony, but. he is a splendid jumper, and with G. Ivil in the saddle he may get into' the money at New Plymouth.

Red Chief was sent* a mile, the last seven furlongs of which he ran in 1.34_. It was a good gallop as he was wide out all the way. The Colossus gelding should be handy in the highweight events during the holidays.

Kilarney Boy was backed and beaten out of £ place at Otaki in the apprentices' race, a slow beginning counting against him getting into a place. He is none the worse for the trip, and might get some money at Awapuni. Looking bright and well after his race at Otaki, Alright strode on freely when covering two circuits at a solid pace. He stopped after going a mile on Saturday, and beat only two horses home, but the Inflation gelding will be better suited over the seven furlongs at Awapuni.

Stony Broke took no harm by his race at Otaki, where he maintained his reputation for consistency by sharing second honours with Foxcatcher in the Hiiia Handicap.- Some morp place-money is likely to come his way during the holidays.

H. Benge is not taking Mr. Pym and Hulabaloo to Woodville on Saturday although both are in good fettle Tatara Lad and Hulabaloo are to do their holiday" raring in Taranaki. Glamour Girl will probably go to Stratford, and Mr. Pym and Courl Crier will be at Awapuni.

Enard Bay has come on well recently, and this Phaleron Bay filly should run prominently in her holiday engagements. She will probably be kent for the Marton Meeting. The Phaleron Bay—Lady Hoariri filly is making good progress. Given her first sprint this morning she hit out in promising style. She is trained by C. Gordon.

CUP AND RAILWAY

TAKANINI HOPES

LANDVEYO'R-SWEET BISCUIT

(Special to "The Post.")

TAKANINI, This Day

Beaten into third place in the Te Awamutu Cup, Landveyor did quite well under the solid impost of 9.6, and now tackles his major engagement, the Auckland' Cup, better seasoned by the racing. Last year Landveyor was virtually the pacemaker for the two miles, as Water Vixen was so far out in front that she was hardly seen by the field until she stopped quickly half a mile from home, at which stage Landveyor, who was heading the rest, was left in front too early and Foxwyn got him on the post. Prior to this effort there was a strong doubt whether the Sur-' veyor gelding would prove a stayer, as his best efforts were recorded up to a mile, but on the second day his decisive victory in the A.R.C. Handicap oVer a mile and a half dispelled any doubts as to his capabilities on this score.

In last year's contest for the Railway Handicap, the Takanini*-trained Sweet Biscuit made a bold attempt to repea,t her 1943 success in the event, going under to Neenah only in the last 50 yards when being acclaimed the winner. For her third attempt on Boxing Day, the Broiefort filly will have another strong following, particularly as she has done so well since her return from Riccarton, where she ran fourth in the Stewards' Handicap. Being a brilliant beginner, she is the type well suited for the Ellerslie six furlongs, and she is sure to be in me call. Actually, the Railway Handicap is a lucky race for her owner, Mr. C. W. Jackson, who won the event twice with Bronwen before Sweet Biscuit's success.-' Incidentally, Bronwen was the first horse to carry his colours. Balmacara's acceptance in the Railway Handicap came rather as a surprise, and if started he will be ridden by R. B. Ireland. In the King's Plate, G. Hughes is to be his pilot, while G. Cameron, who was associated with nis successes in the Great Northern, and Waikato Guineas, will be in the saddle in the Derby. This is a big programme but not an insuperable task to a class three-year-old. Not so many seasons ago Gay Blonde attempted the three events, winning the Railway Handicap, being beaten half a head by Synagogue in the King's Plate, and winning the Derby. Balmacara, recognised as a good beginner, would have the necessary attributes for a Railway contender, but when n is considered that he has to concede weight of upwards of 161b to other smart three-year-olds, it will be seen that his task will not be an easy one. Balmacara's superiority over others of his age' may not be so marked at Christmas, but until beaten he must be treated with the greatest of respect.GETTING ON IN YEARS. Cambria has made some bold attempts to win a Railway Handicap, and the Cambria Park gelding again figures as a competitor, but he is at an age where there may be a deterioration rather than an improvement in his form. Cambria has been placed on the last three occasions he has contested sprint events, but in none of those events was the class as good as that engaged in the Railway Handicap. His stablemate My Bonnie has shaped poorly when it is considered that she has the necessary capabilities, and a big improvement will be necessary if she is to take this event.

King's Pride is slowly regaining his friends. His form to date has not been good, neither had his track work until the last week or so, when he seemed to take a fresh lease of Life and 'infuse much more dash into his tasks. The boom juvenile of last season and one who was earlier predicted as a potential classic winner, his stocks slumped somewhat through his efforts in open company, and he cannot be regarded with any confidence. A- lightweight who may prove capable of a mild surprise is the Foxbridge filly White Blaze. When beaten into fourth place in the Waikato Guineas she seemed to have had every chance, but after cooling off she was very sore as the result of a jarred joint. As she could hardly have won in these circumstances it was reasonable to -excuse her defeat. She is a much better filly than this season's form would indicate, and the fact that she now looks better than at any stage of her career is causing some optimism to followers of P. E. Pope's stable. As a two-ye-ar-old, White Blaze outclassed a field at Te Aroha with 9.8 over six furlongs, and if she were to regain that form she would have to be treated with respect.. Everything now points to that recovery of form, and the Christmas Meeting will provide her with the opportunity-to atone. All going well, White Blaze will also contest the Derby.
