SALE OF GROCERIES
"BLACK MARKET RAMPANT"
The evidence before the Labour Bills Committee was overwhelming in indicating that black marketing is rampant throughout New Zealand as far as groceries are concerned," said the Leader of the Opposition (Mr. Holland) in the debate on the Shops and Offices Amendment Bill in the House of Representatives yesterday. "In Auckland there are more dairies m the main district than grocery shops," he continued, "not withstanding that every householder gets fresh milk delivered every day. Obviously these dairies are not open for the purpose of selling milk—they are open for the purpose of selling groceries." Mr. T. H. McCombs (Government, Lyttelton): There is nothing to stop them.
Mr. Holland: Of Course there is. If we are going to stop, shops selling groceries after hours we should stop dairies.
In one provincial town there were 45 dairies, said Mr. Holland, and he was quite sure that they could not exist and pay wages if they were selling only milk.
