MR. DWIGHT F. DAVIS

WASHINGTON, November 29. Mr. Dwight F. Davis, donor of the Davis Cup for international tennis, has died. His career in tennis included second placing in the United States singles championships in 1898 and 1899, while still at college, and winning the doubles championship in partnership with Holcombe Ward in 1899-1901. He repre-

sented America at Wimbledon on several occasions from 1900 until 1921. He was still playing, tennis in 1935, when he played a friendly match at Cannes with 11. W. Austin, who had played in a Davis Cup challenge round 31 years after Davis's first appearance, and the following year he won the United States veterans' championship doubles in partnership with W. J. Clothier.

He served in the United States army as a colonel in 3918, and occupied the positions of Assistant Secretary of War and Secretary in 1925. In 1929 he was appointed Governor of the Philippines.
