WELFARE SYSTEM

CARE FOR UNMARRIED MOTHERS

LONDON, November 29

Unmarried mothers and their babies have been cared for by the State for the last 2\ years without the public knowing it. The Health Department has now released the story of its system, whereby a, number of residential homes take in unmarried mothers and provide prernatal and ante-natal care for the mothers and children.

The mothers, who enter as "Miss" Somebody, are permitted to change their names by deed _ poll to "Mrs." Somebody else. The Babies are registered under the new names. '

The matron of one hospital told the "Daily Mail" that the homes were run on enlightened lines. The mothers did housework, were taught the care of children, and could have visitors and invite their parents to stay overnight.
