NAME SUPPRESSED

ABORTION CHARGE P.A. NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. Suppression of the name of accused was ordered by Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., when a charge of unlawfully using an instrument with intent to procure the miscarriage of a girl aged 14 was made against a man in the New Plymouth Magistrate's Court today. "It is unusual, but in view of the fact that undoubtedly his name will not be suppressed in a short time if he pleads guilty and appears for sentence, and in view of the condition of his wife, and for her sake alone, I am , prepared to grant the request, but only for those reasons," said Mr. Woodward. The offence, which occurred on August 22, was admitted, and accused was committed to the Supreme Court at Wellington for sentence. Accused, in a statement to the police produced by Senior-Detective E. C. Jarrold said that what the girl had said was perfectly true, that he had only done it to help her, and that had he known in the first place that she was only 14 years of age he would have had nothing to do with her. Accused said he had been told that the man who had got the girl into trouble was married and that if something was not done about it the man's home would be wrecked. Accused also said that it appeared there might not be anything wrong with the girl at all, and that it did not seem to him that he was committing abortion.
