NOT NEEDED NOW

CONSENT TO ENGAGE ESSENTIAL LABOUR The lifting of a further control measure has been announced by the Minister of National Service and Industrial Manpower (Mr. MeLagan). Employers in essential industries will no longer require to obtain consent before engaging labour provided that they notify any engagements to the manpower officer within 48 hours. "In effect, this relaxation means that prior consent to engagements of labour will henceforth only be required in the case of non-esseiitial undertakings and even then only in the case of single women aged 18 to 30 years and men aged 18 to 45 other than returned servicemen." said Mr. McLagan. "Where labour is engaged without consent, however, the employer will still be required to notify the manpower officer within 48 hours. It will be appreciated that this notification is most essential if conflicting actions on the part of manpower officers are to be avoided. Target dates have been announced for the lilting of the various remaining controls and I am most anxious to see all our remaining essential industries by those dates reach the point at which they will no longer be reliant upon manpower controls in any form to secure or maintain staff. J feel that the freedom to engage labour without prior consent which is now possible will greatly help in this direction."
