At the Manila atrocity trial, Yamashita, when asked whether he was aware of or ordered the Philippines atrocities, gestured with large muscular hands, and said: "No, absolutely not." He added that he had determined that Manila was indefensible, and Iherefora ordered his troops out, but the naval forces remained without his knowledge.
