AIR TRAVEL
SECURITY PROVISION The hope that there would be some measure of insurance or security for people using the Dominion's air services was expressed by Mr. E. P. Meachen (Government, Maryborough) speaking in the second reading debate on the New Zealand National Airways Bill in the House of Representatives last evening. Mr. Meachen said there did not appear to be anything in the Bill to indicate that if an accident took place there would be compensation payable. or that if luggage was lost compensation would be paid. He hoped the Government would give consideration to that very important aspect. Reading one of the Union Airways tickets he was reminded that the customer at present took absolutely all the risks. Mr. Clyde Carr (Government, Timaru): That's on the steamer tickets too.
Mr. Meachen added that in the outline on the back of the ticket of the responsibilities the company did not take it was specifically pointed out that even if luggage were lost by the negligence of officers employed by the company there was no liability. He remembered that when the steamer express collided with a wharf in Wellington and a hold was flooded the company took no responsibility, but the Railways Department met claims for-damage to luggage.
