GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S' TRIBUTE

"During the course of a recent holiday I spent some days in the backblocks where, in the stillness and companionship of the 'open spaces,' I found mv thoughts unconsciously reverting to'a number of the schools and young people's organisations I had visited, says the Governor-General, Sir CyrU Newall, in a letter to Mr. J. D. Howitt, chairman of the Boys* Institute, Wellington. ~ , . , ~,i One of the occasions that stood out most clearly in his mind, said his Excellency, was a visit he nad paid to the Boys'"lnstitute camp at Pahautanui, after an earlier visit, to the headquarters" in Tasman Street, Wellington. "Although I was impressed at the time, and. I hope, expressed myself accordingly I am writing to congratulate all those responsible for the institute and its holiday camps on the splendid work they are doing." said the GovernorGeneral "They are instilling the right ideas into the minds of the lads, caring for their physical well-being, and, in addition, making available to tnern a really happy and healthy holiday m camp." ' ~ , i v The institute, Sir Cyril declared, was giving a great service to New Zealand, and was deserving of the gratitude and active support of all sections of the community. The Governor-General s letter has been used as a preface for an attractively produced booklet, replete with photographs depicting all phases of the institute's activities, which has just been published. In a historical review the publishers pay tribute to tne promoters of the work, which began as far back as 1882. when a class was established for under-privileged boys who were without any church connection.
