CRICKET

ELL S GRaAI KNOCK

BRILLIANTLY-MADE 291

Play in the Wellington cricket competitions on Saturday afternoon was given plenty of sparkling touches, and one to use the bat with great flourish was J. Ell. who had been the leading light on the previous Saturday in running to a century without losing his wicket. Continuing his innings, he mastered the bowling again and went on to establish a new record senior score for Wellington. His brilliant exhibition at the Basin Reserve produced 291 runs, and it ended when, missing a ball (which was rare), he was given out on appeal—stumped. In adding 190 runs to his ]01 on the previous Saturday, Ell was at the wickets for 115 minutes, his full score of 291 being compiled in 3£ hours. A 6 and fortyseven 4's were included in his great tally for Wellington, whose innings had realised 421 for eight wickets when closure was applied. St. Patrick's College Old Boys did well enough in their second innings to avoid outright defeat; in fact, they had four wickets intact when play ended. A fine recovery by Hutt stirred interest in the Hutt-Midland match at the Hutt Recreation Ground. J. Kemp played his part well in making a century, and when Midland batted a second time Chapman and Buchan were the principals in bringing about a batting collapse, the side being dismissed for 58 runs. Time, however, was against a complete reversal of the position for an outright win, Midland taking first innings points. Kilbirnie consolidated their position against Institute Old Boys at Kilbirnie, Barker and Russ scoring plentifully, and the pressure was applied for an outright win, which, with Allen as an effective bowling aid. was secured. University's total was too much for Wellington College Old Boys, who, in this match finished at Basin Reserve after having been started at Kilbirnie on the previous Saturday, had to follow on, but kept their opponents clear of an eightpointer. Petone did quite well in a hard battle for runs against Karori at Karori Park, but their effort was a long way short of the requirement. Main individual performances on the day were: Batting: Ell (Wellington) 291, J. Kemp (Hutt) 105, Barker (Kilbirnie) 84, Russ (Kilbirnie) 77, Phillips (St. Pat's O.B.) 63, Willis (Petone) 54, Barber (W.C.0.8.) 51, Meech (Wellington) 41.
