DIAMOND WEDDING

The diamond wedding of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Ferens, of Auckland, and formerly well-known residents of Dunedin. was celebrated last month. Mr. Ferens. who was born at Otepopo, near Oamaru, on August 1, 1855, was married i.o Miss Catherine Jane Gilmore, of Belfast. Ireland, on October 15, 1885, at Lyttelton. His father. Mr. Thomas Ferens. arrived in Otago by the first ship, the John Wickliffe. in 1848, and he and his wife were the first European couple to be married in North Otago. Mr. W. H. Ferens is a devoted member of the Methodist Church, as was his father. He was well known in Dunedin as a Post Office official from 1884 until his retirement in 1916, and as an enthusiastic member of the Otago Early Settlers' Association, of which he was president and vice-president on different occasions. Mr. and Mrs. Ferens left Dunedin in 1941, and since then have been residing with their daughter, Mrs. A. B. Mac Donald. in Auckland.

Other daughters are Mrs. P. P. Gardiner, of Northland, Wellington, and Mrs. G. R. Milward. of Timaru, and there are two sons, Mr. Gordon H. Ferens and Mr. Ledlie S. Ferens, both of Dunedin.
