REPORT TO HOUSE

ARMED FORCES ACCOUNTS

"Since previous inquiries by the committee have been concerned with the accounts of the Armed Forces, the committed is pleased to note an improvement in the state of these accounts, although some still leave much to be desired," stated the report of the Public Accounts Committee on the annual report of the Controller and Auditor-General (Mr. C. G. Collins) for the financial year ended March 31 last, presented in the House of Representatives yesterday, by the chairman of the committee (Mr. T. H. McCombs, Government, Lyttelton). Mr. McCombs* said the committee had examined Mr. Collins's report, which had been referred to it by the House, and had heard Mr. Collins and his officers and also officers of certain departments reported on by the Audi-tor-General. As a result of its investigation, the committee concurred in the comments contained in the report. The committee expressed the hope that the cessation of hostilities would make it possible for the Armed Forces to keep their accounts up to date. The committee's report concluded by expressing the hope that Mr. Collins would long enjoy his well-earned retirement and by thanking him for his ready assistance to the committee and his courtesy and fairness on all occasions.
