7½-MILE SHELTER

Rec. 10 a.m. NEW YORK, Oct. 28. * An underground palace to which the Imperial headquarters; planned to go for a last-ditch resistance was almost completed near Mount Sushiro, 150 miles to the north-west of Tokio when the war ended. A structure 7£ miles long had been designed to house the Emperor, the Imperial headquarters, and various government offices. The building was a huge air raid shelter, and entailed an expenditure of 60 million yen and the employment of 75.000 men. The shelter ran through three mountains. Construction started in October, 1944. The contractors were offered a bonus if they finished in the specified time. They failed.
