CHESS

PRE-WAR EVENT REVIVED

The Wellington v. Rest of Province chess match was revived on Saturday at Palmerston North after a break of five years ' due to the war. It was a great success, thanks to the good work of the organisers, Messrs. H. I. Christensen (Palmerston North) and J. L. Hardy (Wellington) and their assistants. A cordial welcome was given to the visiting players by Mr. F. Gatley, the Wellington president. The Rest of Province Side mustered 16 more players than the city team, and eight of them were transferred to balance the sides, 31 boards being in use. Two rounds were played. In the following scores the abbreviations are: Wanganui W., Palmerston North P.N., Napier N., Hastings H., Woodville Wo., Waipukurau Wai., Ruahine R., Takapau T., and Ohakune O.:— Wade, R. G.; 2, v. The tallies at the first 23 boards, where no "borrowed players" were taking part, were: City 22, The Rest 24, and the latter are therefore the first holders of the trophy donated by a Palmerston North enthusiast for this annual event. They had a strong tail, which more than offset their deficiency at the higher boards.; • . . ' ;: Nine clubs were represented in the victorious team, and.this enabled a very useful business meeting to =;be held during the interval between the afternoon and evening sessions. Com-_ plimentary references were made to Mr. Wade's very fine play in the Australasian tourney recently held; in Sydney, and he was accorded a:-well-deserved ovation. The provincial side is now "one up," as each teani had, won two of the four matches played prior to the war. .-, "- :'.. :-■' •:■. :v.-.v-\?--v;';.\"'--"-'.;"
