SURPRISES AT CHESS
•SYDNEY, September 12. ■ The Australian chess championship continues to produce surprises, and at the half-way stage no fewer than nine players have a chance of winning. In the eighth round C. J. S. Purdy lost to H. E. Klass, New South Wales. The match between R. G. Wade and C. G. Watson was adjourned. L. Sterner lost his adjourned game to F. Crowl, and has an adjourned game with the Queensland champion, C. Salm. Wade was outplayed in the middle game by the veteran Victorian player, Watson, but extricated himself and obtained full compensation. The game was adjourned for the second time. The leading scores after eight rounds are:—S. Lazare, 5h (with one adjourned); Purdy and Crowl, each 54; Steiner. 5 (with one adjourned); G. Koshnitsky, 5; Wade, 4$ (with one adjournde); Klass and Harris, each 4; M.S. Goldstein, 3J (with two adjourned).
