RETURN TO DOMINION
USE OF STEAMER WAHINE
The well-known inter-island steamer Vahine will be withdrawn from the service on arrival at Wellington on September 15 until further notice. . The Wahine will be used to bring soldiers and airmen now stationed m the Pacific back to New Zealand, according to an announcement today by the Minister of Defence (Mr. Jones). Air transport also will be used to bring back Pacific Service personnel.
A triple-screw passenger steamer, the Union Steam Ship Company's 4436----ton Wahine was built at Dumbarton by W Denny and Brothers in 1913 .for the Wellington-Lyttelton run. She is 375tt in length, with a beam of 52ft and a depth of 25ft. When a new 6900-ton ship being built by Vickers. Armstrong, Ltd., is delivered the Wahine will be used as a stand-by and the present stand-by ship, the 38-year-old Maori, will be scrapped.
