SYDNEY POWER
STRIKE
NO SETTLEMENT YET
SYDNEY, September 6. Two State Ministers conferred with the Prime Minister, Mr. Chifley, in Canberra last night, in an effort to find a formula to settle the Bunnerong power-house dispute. No decision was reached and the conference will be resumed today. Unless the dispute is.settled today, "white-collar" volunteers at Bunnerong will refuse to provide power, except for essential purposes, after midnight tonight. If this action is taken, drastic rationing will be imposed, resulting in widespread unemployment. The electricity supply failed in 13 Sydney suburbs yesterday. Total electricity black-outs occurred in 18 suburbs today, and numbers of hospitals and factories were temporarily put out of commission. A mass meeting of 500 Bunnerong strikers today rejected compromise proposals and decided to continue the strike. In Canberra it is claimed that the strikers are liable to prosecution under the National Security Act. So far, however, there is no sign that the Commonwealth intends to use its emergency powers against the strikers.
