WAGES IN BRITAIN
LONDON, September 5. Between October, 1938, and January, 1945, the wages of more than 5,000,000 manual workers in Britain had an overall rise of 76 "per cent, according to figures published in the Ministry of Labour Gazette. Most of the wageearners were in manufacturing industries. Men over 21 averaged £5 19s 3d a week last January, and women over 18 averaged £3 3s 2d. The increase for women was 21 per cent, greater than for men, partly because of the marked increase in the number of women doing work formerly done by men.
