Sir,— Recently I saw where several men found guilty of desertion were sentenced by court-martial to sentences of hard labour ranging from six months to two years. Now that the Japanese surrender has been officially signed, could you tell me their position? I understand that defaulters in camps are to be released, after having been sheltered by our fighting men for the past two or three years. Some soldiers sentenced had seen considerable service in New Zealand, and in some cases overseas. Will these men be kept confined whilst the defaulters whom they protected are allowed their freedom?-! am, ete^
