September 4. This evening their Excellencies the Governor-General and Lady Wewall, attended by Captain the Honourable D. E. A. Winn, were present at the patriotic concert given by Mr. Isador Goodman in the Town Hall. September 5. His Excellency the GovernorGeneral presided at a meeting of the Executive Council this morning. Mr. H. Ritchie, director and secretary of the Southland Building Society and chairman of the Invercargill Licensing Trust, is visiting Wellington. The Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. A. K. Warren), who has served abroad as a chaplain, has returned to the South Island is making a good recovery from his wounds. Dr. B. H. Wilsdon, advisory assistant o:, wool problems to the British Government, left Palmerston North by air today for Christchurch. He was welcomed at Massey Agricultural College yesterday by Dr. E. Marsden, secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, and entertained at luncheon there. Dr. Wilsdon will visit Wellington on September 12. Mr. T. G. Taylor, barrister, of Wellington, has been appointed as successor to Mr. R. W. Fenton on the National Rehabilitation Council. Mr. Fenton has resigned from the council following his retirement from the executive committee of the Returned Services Association. Mr. Taylor, who is a member' of the committee, was for some time the R.S.A. representative on the Wellington district rehabilitation committee. Mr. Keeble Thurkett, of Wellington, a member of the R.N.Z.A.F. Band, has been advised by the secretary of the Trinity College, London, of his success in passing his practical examination for conductorship of military bands, L.T.C.L. degree. It is understood this is the first occasion that it has been awarded in New Zealand. Mr. Thurkett holds the same degree tor the pianoforte, for which he was awarded the gold medal.
