COLONIAL SERVICE
TWO APPOINTMENTS MADE
Two appointments have been made from a number of New Zealand applicants to the British Colonial Service in Africa as a result of the appeal made some little time ago by the Governor of Kenya for assistance in filling vacancies in the legal service of the colony, says the Public Service Commissioner (Mr. J. H. Boyes). Mr. Albert George Lowe, barrister and solicitor, Auckland, has been appointed Crown Counsel for Kenya. He has had a long experience in private practice and recently was for three years secretary-legal adviser to the Government of Tonga, during part of which time he acted as Chief Justice of the Kingdom. He enlisted in the R.N.Z.A.F. on the outbreak of war and reached the rank of squadron leader. He had considerable experience as Judge Advocate in courtsmartial. He is married and has two children.
Mr. E. J. Haughey, M.A., LL.M., 8.C0m., has been appointed a Crown Counsel in Tanganyika. He has spent all his professional life in the Public Service, and at present is office solicitor to the Native Department, Wellington. He has had considerable experience in handling all types of Native legal problems. In 1929 he was awarded the Senior University Scholarship in Roman Law. Mr. Haughey volunteered for service overseas in 1940, but was rejected on medical grounds.
