S.E. ASIA COMMAND
GEN. SLIM TAKES OVER
LONDON, September 2. The War Office announced that General Slim had succeeded General Leese as commander of the Allied land forces in the South-east Asia Command. General Dempsey will take over the command of the 14th Army. In an order of the day General Slim said: "You in this theatre have played a great part in enforcing surrender. You have endured and achieved. Another task lies ahead. We have to restore peace and justice to these vast territories. We must succour and restore to their homes thousands of captives we have freed from brutal conI nnement."
A Japanese medium aircraft-carrier bombed by Avengers of the British Pacific Fleet. The bomb went down the forward aircraft lift and blew the carrier's bow decking wide open, splitting the flight deck in a straight line in the middle.
