WHEAT IN BULK

SPECIAL APPLIANCES USED PA. AUCKLAND, September 3. The discharging of the first bulk grain cargo to be handled at Auckland started at a rapid pace this afternoon, new equipment designed for the purp.ose proving an outstanding success. The ship brought 7000 tons of Canadian wheat, of which 3000 tons is loose LnWhen t°be Sfirst of the holds had been cleared of bagged wheat and other cargo, a specially-adjusted grab quickly discharged the bulk grain into one of the 15-ton hoppers that had been built for the job. The hopper was mounted on high steel standards and the grain ran from it into tanks erected, on tip lorries or into a smaller bin at its side. The steel or wooden tanks on the lorries hold five tons. Fourteen tons an hour is the normal rate for dscharging bagged wheat at I Auckland, but about 40 tons an hour of bulk wheat was discharged by the new method. There was a minimum of wastage, as the grab had been adjusted to give a very clean bite and the top of it was covered with a metal shield.
