HUNT CUP STEEPLES

AGA KAY AT ODDS

CRAMOND BAY ON FLAT

(Special to "The Post.") NEW PLYMOUTH, Sept. 1. Conditions could scarcely have been worse for the Taranaki and EgmontWanganui Hunt Clubs' Combined Meeting at New Plymouth today. Heavy rain set in before 10 o'clock and continued for over four hours. The track soon cut up and the going was the heaviest that it has been for a meeting at New Plymouth for many years. The weather affected the attendance, and the totalisator handled only £30,483, compared with £34,998 10s when the meeting was held at Hawera last year. The hurdles were run in heavy rain and it was not possible to pick up the colours at times. Bettermusk ran to the front five furlongs from home and thereafter was not in danger of defeat. He led Spiro and Political Boy into the straight, and though Spiro was hard ridden he could make no impression. Political Boy might have been closer but for losing ground at the hurdle by the five furlongs. Gold Dale showed out in front for a while, but retired six furlongs from home. Nightward, Caelus, Fox-brae, and Noble Fox followed the placed horses home. Golden Kea led all the way in the first division of the Weraroa Stakes. Golden Ash was with Golden Kea most of the way, but weakened in the straight, and Second Seal, who had been handy most of the way, finished well to take second place. Lily Ann settled down in about fourth place, but was at no stage going like a winner. Te Heroine was handy to the leaders most of the way, but did not finish on. Revelling in the going, Gayanne won the second division in solid style. Merrimake began best and soon established a good lead from Gayanne, El Santo, Horonui, and General Saleve. Gayanne moved up to Merrimake turning for home, where El Santo was third, General Saleve having drifted back. Gayanne ran on to win comfortably from General Saleve, who finished fast to cut El Santo out of second money. Newel Post was fourth, with Merrimake next. Gayanne. paid nearly a score and a half for a win. Bueno won the Waihi Hack in solid fashion. He was soon in front, being attended by Chevalita early and, when she dropped out, by Young Trent, but he held on in good style in the straight to win. Young Trent went a fine race for a fresh horse. Silver Pal came from well back for third. Bueno and Chevalito led along the back from Young Trent, Chef d'Oeuvre, Tifox, and Royal View. In the straight Young Trent ran up to Bueno, the pair being followed by Royal View, Chef d'Oeuvre, and Stony Broke. Bueno went on to beat Young Trent, with Silver Pal coming fast for third. Then came Stony Broke, Tifox, Adrigoole, and Royal View. WINS COMFORTABLY. Aga Kay, an aged half-brother to Wotan and Game Carrington, won the Combined Hunt Cup in easy fashion. He ran past the early pacemaker, Baron Bold, six furlongs from home, and from then on he was not troubled. He jumped splendidly all the way. Political Boy, who had started in the hurdles earlier in the day, made a good showing without having any chance with the winner. Our Nation was in the picture over the last half-mile to take third money. Edward and New Battle were next. Baron Bold made the pace for about a mile and a half from Roman Orator and First Edition, but shortly after starting the final round Aga Kay went up fast, followed by Political Boy, and this pair were the leaders down the back from Our Nation, with Edward and New Battle improving their positions. Aga Kay passed the judge with 15 lengths to spare from Political Boy, who was four lengths in front of Our Nation. Edward just beat New Battle for fourth, and then came Northfield, Golden Memory, and British Patrol. Aga Kay paid over a third of a century. A hot favourite in Grey Salute failed to pay a dividend in the Halcombe Memorial, which was won by Cramond Bay, who was having his first race over a middle distance. The winner was always handily placed, and racing to the front at the High School bend he came into the straight with Peter's Choice on the outside of him. However, over the last bit Cramond Bay was always doing the better and he beat Peter's Choice by a head. Betterman finished strongly for third, and Keen Play also came home well. Grey Salute was last at the six furlongs, and although he then started a fast forward run he failed to sustain it. Hulabaloo was the early pacemaker from Boden Park and Bonnieve, but racing into the back Cramond Bay and Peter's Choice moved up, and Cramond Bay joined Hulabaloo at the half-mile. Hulabaloo retired shortly afterwards and Cramond Bay , and Peter's Choice went on to fight out the issue. Betterman and Keen Play finished strongly, and then came after a gap Grey Salute, Hulabaloo, and Dawn Flight. The Paeroa horse Old Mack led practically all the way in the Ladies' Necklace to win decisively. He was well handled by Mr. C. Waller. Scarteen moved up along the back and was almost on terms with Old Mack, but weakened in the run home, and Mulla Park, coming fast in the straight, beat him for second. Windsor Star, who covered a lot of extra ground, was a close fourth, Whooray fell at the home turn, but the rider, Mr. K. Lupton, escaped injury. Old Mack, Potomac, and Old Red were the early leaders from Windsor Star on the outside, but Scarteen moved up smartly and out of the back stretch was in second place behind Old Mack, with Restriction, Potomac, and Windsor Star next. Old Mack ran on strongly to beat Mulla Park, with Scarteen and Windsor Star close up next. Potomac, Royal Scholar, and Red Chief were next. LEYBOURNE THE SPRINT. Revelling in the heavy going, Leybourne won the Stratford Handicap decisively. He was about sixth going out of the back, but then started to move up and finished far too well for ■ his opponents. Derryogue, who seemed a little unlucky at the home turn, came on strongly for second, whereas Tideless weakened after leading into the straight. Colonel Vaals came with a great run over the final stages to be fourth. Plate Lad was first out and showed the way along ths back from Tideless, Vermette. and Derryogue. Racing towards the straight Tideless headed Plato Lad, with Derryogue and Leybourne making up ground. Leybourne took the measure of Tideless a furlong from home and went on to win with something in hand from Derryogue. Tideless was third clear of the fast-finishing Colonel Vaals. Then came Black Plato, Plato Lad, and Vermette. The two penalised runners, Gayanne and Bueno, fought out the finish of the Waverley Hack Handicap, with Gayanne winning easily at the end. She raced round the field at the home turn, and though she covered extra ground she was going away at the finish. Bueno ran a' good' race under his weight, but was slightly hampered by the cut-up track on the rails in the straight. Broieloy made up a lot of ground to finish third. Midflame was a good fourth. Kilarney Boy and Drambuie were the leaders along the back from First Footing and Bueno. At the turn Bueno came through on the inner of Kilarney Boy, with Gayanne coming fast on the outer. Going on in great style, Gayanne won by four lengths from Bueno, with Broielov third and Midflame fourth. The rider of Broielov did not weigh in, and third money went to the fourth horse. Midflame. K. Nuttall, the rider of Broielov, was fined £5. THE DETAILED RESULTS. The detailed results were:— Hack and Hunters' Hurdles. £175; l\'., miles and 100 yards.—B-8 Bettermusk, 0.0, car <) l (\V.
