SINGAPORE OCCUPATION
PREPARATIONS FOR WEDNESDAY
LONDON, September 1
Japanese headquarters in Singapore sent a message to Admiral Mountbatten acknowledging the Allied instructions to make the Singapore Government House ready for occupation by Wednesday. The Japanese news agency says that the Singapore Public Service has ordered all Japanese in the five areas through which the Allied forces are making their entry to evacuate the areas by this evening. The present police and administrative authorities are 'functioning till formal orders are received from the Allies. Three hundred employees in Japanese firms are remaining in Singapore till the formal handing over of plants and other important city facilities. - The South-east Asia Command states that as a result of a meeting between the Japanese Admiral Hirose and Commodore A. L. Poland aboard the cruiser London, ai'rangements have been completed for evacuating Sabang. The Japanese handed over plans of the shore defences area and maps, leaving the port in four ships to join other Japanese forces further south. The British are supervising the evacuation to ensure that no Dutch or native property is removed. A mission is being sent from Kandy to Saigon, where negotiations with the Japanese commander will probably take nlace in two or three days. The mission, which will include British and French representatives of the Supreme Commander, will negotiate for the occupation of that part of Indo-China within the orbit of the South-east Asia Command. A similar mission from China will arrange for the occupation of northern IndoChina.
