POPULAR RISING NEAR
FOOD SITUATION TRAGIC
(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.) ATHENS, September 2. "We are on the eve of a popular rising due to the tragic food situation," stated a proclamation issued by the Greek trades union organisation which is at present under non-Communist leadership. It was added that unless steps were taken to lower the cost of living:, "we will be obliged to mobilise the workers." The proclamation blamed the Minister of Supply, Mr. Varvaressus, for strikes, minimum wages, the black market, and speculators. An agreement has been reached between the Government and manufacturers and wholesalers whereby all existing stocks of manufactured goods are being handed over to the State for distribution under the rationing system. The State is not paying the owners cash, but in raw materials of equal value plus the cost of production. The Prime Minister, Admiral Voulgaris, announced that Britain and America had asked Greece to postpone the departure of the Greek delegation under the Foreign Minister, Mr. Polotis, for London, till after the return of Archbishop Damaskinos, the Regent, who is due in London on Thursday.
