TELEVISION DEVELOPMENT
Rec. 11.20 a.m. LONDON, August 31. The television development committee of the Radio Industry Council has decided to apply to the Government for the immediate introduction of a television "still-pattern picture." transmission from Alexandra Palace. The committee disclosed that the 8.8.C. has already begun to send out test signals on the television sound channel. The chairman of the committee said that programmes should start very soon. America would have mass-produced sets on the market early in 1946, and the British industry should move immediately. Commencing on Tuesday the transTasman air mail will close at the Chief Post Office, Wellington, at 10 a.m. instead of 11 a.m. Mr. Peter Moncrief, waterside worker, fell from the shin he was working on into the harbour' yesterday. He was foreman in charge of a section of men who were unicading an overseas ship. When reaching over the ship's side to loosen a sling he lost his balance and fell into the water through a narrow gap between the ship and the wharf. Wet and shaken, he was helped out of the water by his workmates little the worse for his ducking. .
