ESSENTIALITY NOTICE

REVOCATION GAZETTED

Notice cf revocation of the declaration of essentiality in respect of the Government service is contained in today's Gazette. The revocation applies, with a few exceptions throughcut the service.

In drawing attention to this revocation the Minister of Industrial Manpower (Mr. McLagan) referred to his recent statement regarding the intention to remove the cover of essentiality over certain industries, including Government Departments, before the end of September. "The Government desires to give a lead in the revocation of declarations of essentiality, said Mr. McLagan, "and it has therefore been decided that with a few necessary exceptions the declaration over the whole of the Government service will be lifted as from August 31

"As I indicated in my earlier announcement," continued the Minister, "there are certain Government undertakings providing essential public services or closely associated with our rehabilitation and housing programmes which cannot be immediately freed from man-power control and direction measures. Cover of essentiality is accordingly being retained in respect of the following:—

"Mental Hospitals; Prison and Borstal Institutions; Engineering, Architectural and Housing Construction Divisions of the Ministry of Works and Public Works Department, and Hydroelectric Division of Public Works Department; Price Tribunal; Rehabilitation Department; Second Division, Post and Telegraph Department^ Second Division, New Zealand Railways (except Road Services Branch).' In addition, the declaration of essentiality, said the Minister, would be maintained over the Government s dehydration factories by an amendment to the declaration over the canning and fruit-preserving industry, and the field staff of- the State Forest Service

would be covered by an amendment to the declaration covering forestry operations. The sawmills operated by the State Forest Service would remain covered under the existing declaration in respect of the sawmilling industry.
