BRITISH OBJECTION

SCHMELING AS EDUCATOR OF

NAZI YOUTH

LONDON, AugUst 28,

The correspondent of the Associated Press of Great Britain in Germany says that hte British Control Commission stated: "The publishng firm with which Max Schmeling is associated, and for which he is understood to operate in financial matters, has been told that it will not be given a licence as long as Schmeling is associated with it." . A member of the Control Commission said: "Schmeling was a symbol of Nazism for German youth throughout the war. We don't want such a man publishing books for what he contends will be re-education of German youth."

The correspondent adds that the authorities are expected to start an inquiry into the reports of British backing for the Schmeling publishing venture.

The Hamburg correspondent of the "Daily Express" reported last week that Schmeling had been given one of the biggest jobs in the re-education of Nazi youth, and would select new books and supervise .translations of British, American, and French works to eradicate Nazi ideas. Schmeling said in an interview: "German youths aged from 15 to 20 are a dangerous element throughout Germany. They still —let us admit frankly—retain many Nazi ideas. I think they should be compelled to see films of the Dachau, Buchenwald, and Belsen camps.- A lot of them did not realise what was going on. I know I didn't. The Germans should realise the baseness of Nazi ideas."
