TRIBUTE TO WORK OF JESSIE MACKAY

Appreciation of the work of the late Jessie Mackay was expressed by Miss Catherine. Keddell. in a talk to members of the Poetry Society last Tuesday evening. The simplicity and intensity of the poetess's work was demonstrated by the reading of excerpts from her memorable verse, wherein Miss Mackay had faithfully portrayed the spirit of New Zealand. •■ Miss Keddell spoke of "New Zealand's unofficial Poet Laureate" as one who had immortalised the national events of her times and by her seership given us a lasting vision of our country's promise. Mention was made of the annual Jessie Mackay Memorial Competition held by the P.E.N. Club in New Zealand. Prize-winning poems for three consecutive years were read, these having been written by Douglas Stewart, Paula Hanger, and Mary Greig. Mrs. Edith Phillips assisted with the readings. , An informal discussion on , the future . activities of the; society followed.
