PLACING SERVICEMEN

CONTACT CENTRE'S ACTIVITIES

At a meeting of the executive of the Services Commercial Contact Centre on Thursday a review of operations over the last two months was tabled. The figures showed that a very valuable service was being performed on behalf of ex-service men and women,; and that the business community was also co-opex-ating, -• both by providing advice for men and women wishing to set up in business on their own account and by notifying the centre of vacancies existing on their staffs which were available to ex-service-men, it was reported. j As a result of the distribution of explanatory brochures to business firms, the centre now had a list of over 500 positions available in over 150 different firms, covering a wide variety of avenues of employment. The average weekly number of exservicemen calling at the centre was 70, and the daily number of interviews had risen to 14. During the period under review 47 had been placed in suitable employment, 39 had received advice from the panels resulting in their completing business undertakings, and 52 had received advice regarding their future livelihood. Altogether, 62 per cent, of ex-service jnen and women who have called on "the centre had had something done on their behalf. There were men awaiting positions for which there were no suitable vacancies. The hope was expressed that firms would send in particulars of positions open, so that all types of employment would be open to ex-servicemen. The centre is sponsored and financed by the various business and professional associations in Wellington and the Hutt Valley and by the R.S.A. The receipt of a donation of £50 from R. Hannah and Co., Ltd., was gratefully acknowledged. A five-year-old child, Richard Allen, was struck in the eye by an arrow while playing at hisTiome at 23 Quetta Street, Ngaio, this morning.
